Kroger is still trying to buy fellow grocery chain Albertsons in a $24.6 billion deal that stinks to pretty much everybody besides the executives and investors trying to muscle it across the finish line. Earlier this week, a group of Congressional Democrats joined state attorneys general, industry experts, and the country’s largest private-sector union in formal opposition to the deal, calling on the Federal Trade Commission’s chairwoman to block it on grounds of said stinkiness. (They used slightly different language.)
Hanging in the balance are tens of thousands of jobs, hundreds of communities, and healthy competition in the vital American grocery business—not to mention the pricing and selection of the nation’s booze landscape.
